Bowie knife attributed to American maker Samuel Jackson of Baltimore, MD. Goins Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings states that Mr. Jackson is first listed in the city directory in 1833. He is listed in 1840 to 1851 as a "surgical instrument maker." In 1855 and 1856 as a "cutler". This company manufactured "Bowie" type knives, among other kinds of cutlery. This knife has the style of Mr. Jackson's Bowie Knife Works (ebony pinned handle, and appearance). It boasts a 10-1/2" upswept blade, obviously showing skill and style in form of manufacture of both surgical instruments and Bowie Knife makers combined. This is a real killer knife in all respects. c. 1845-48.
